Goldie & the Baers (a short story)
Redesigned by Jason & Jeanie K
Once upon a time there were three BAERS who lived in a house in the woods. There was a great big father BAER, a middle-sized mother BAER, and a tiny baby BAER.
One day their soup was too hot to eat, so they decided to go for a walk in the woods. They decided to visit their favorite spots down by the big lake, the well-stocked lake had some beautiful bass in it… But first they may play some tennis on the two newly surfaced tennis courts, have a snack in the community garden, then decide to take a dip in the indoor or outdoor pool. The Hamlet has so much to offer.
While they were out, a little girl called Goldie came through the trees and found their house. The sign on the door said “WELCOME TO THE BAER”S. She knocked on the door and, as there was no answer, she pushed it open and went inside. It was so cold outside and she wanted to be warm inside …
In front of her was a table with three chairs, one large chair, one middle-sized chair and one small chair. On the table were three bowls of soup undoubtedly from The Hamlet’s Social Committee’s Soup & Bread Contest… one large bowl, one middle-sized bowl and one small bowl – and three spoons. The home had everything she could every want. It could be her “Forever Home”.
While she was waiting for the soup to cool she decided to look around what could be her new home… maybe the “Baers” left it, or maybe she could buy it…
Goldie was hungry and the soup looked good, so she sat in the great big chair, picked up the large spoon and tried some of the soup from the big bowl. But the chair was very big and very hard, the spoon was heavy and the soup too hot. She needed to look around more. The Living Room had a wood burning fireplace with a built in fan, the furniture was nice and cozy too. She loved the stone fireplace and saw faces of animals and friends that seemed to jump out at here if she looked really hard. Even the big foot on the upper left side of the chimney, she wondered, “ is that a stone casting of Papa bear’s foot… ?”
Outside she saw two BBQ’s, about a hundred yards from the house a Gazebo, it had a nice bamboo table and chairs, was screened in for those nights you wanted to sit by the stars, a fire pit was there too. WOW … this home has everything.
The attached garage was heated and has so many custom storage cabinetry/closets, one they used for a large pantry, others had tools and other stuff needed to have in this “Forever Home”. They even have a large freezer and compactor in the garage for their convenience. An outside deck with a large umbrella and lounge chairs, inside 2 other decks (one the Family room) that are now four-season, with windows and screens, skylights too – all in beautiful blondish wood. The blond looks like my hair color, the propane stoves will keep me warm and toasty… I love it!!!
Another area with screens and windows for all-year fun, windows galore, skylights too, a very expensive looking Caribbean Fan, dimmer lights and a large 4 seat Hot Tub. Love my hot tub. I see they even have a wet-bar, great for making drinks, in the hot tub, with the snow coming down, WOW… what a wonderful home!
Goldie decided to check on the soup again, and went over to the middle-sized chair. But this chair was far too soft, and when she tried the soup from the middle-sized bowl it was too cold. So she went over to the little chair and picked up the smallest spoon and tried some of the soup from the tiny bowl. This time it was neither too hot nor too cold. It was just right and so delicious that she ate it all up.
Next Goldie went upstairs, where she found two bedrooms. There was a great big bed, in the Master Bedroom it was so beautiful with high cathedral ceiling of all wood, a slimline A/C unit with a remote control, windows hi & low and automatic shades, the bathroom was Spa-like with imported tile, subtle greens, and bamboo one-piece wooden sinks, all metal fixtures in brushed stainless. The shower, so many jets, a large seat for Papa Baer and even has lights in the shower. WOW!!! Musta cost a bundle!!! A smaller bedroom was there too, they converted it into an office, great idea if you don’t need the bedroom, work from home… these “bears” thought of everything.
Goldie went back downstairs, she opened some closets and found the owners had the crawl space under their home encapsulated and very well lit, WOW … so much storage here, you don’t find many Pocono homes with this much storage, and the crawl space well lit and available inside the home. It was heated too so the pipes won’t freeze.
By now she was feeling rather tired. so she climbed into the big bed and lay down. The big bed was very hard and far too big. Then she tried the middle-sized bed, but that was far too soft, so she went downstairs to the third bedroom and climbed into the tiny little bed. It was neither too hard nor too soft. In fact, it felt just right, all cozy and warm. and in no time at all Goldie fell fast asleep.
In a little while, the three Baers came back from their walk in the woods. They found nice hiking trails, one that went over to the dam, the lake gave them a nice snack of freshly caught bass, hungry after swimming and playing tennis. They also had a nice sauna after working out in the gym in the Clubhouse.
A storm was coming, they knew their Generator would go on immediately and their home would be safe and secure, all the appliances would be on, and the Hot Tub ready for them to enjoy. They used propane for almost everything although electric heat was there as well.
As the BAERS approached their home the motion sensor lights were on, it may have been deer, or the other cute animals they see almost every day, what a fun place to live… their alarm system with speakers inside and outside was quiet so they new the home was secure… serenity when you want it, and activities at the clubhouse if you want to partake.
They saw at once that Father BAER had forgot to set the alarm, there is no crime in The Hamlet, many leave their doors unlocked… the BAERS pushed open the door of their house and Father BAER looked around. then roared with a growly voice,
“SOMEONE’S BEEN SITTING IN MY CHAIR!”
Mother BAER said in a quiet gentle voice.
“Somebody has been sitting in my chair.”
Then Little BAER said in small squeaky baby voice.
“Somebody has been sitting in my chair.”
Then Father BAER looked at his bowl of soup and saw the spoon in it and he said in his great big growly voice,
“SOMEBODY HAS BEEN EATING MY SOUP”
Then Mother BAER saw that her bowl had a spoon in it, and said in her quiet voice.
“Somebody has been eating my soup and the Little BAER looked at his soup bowl and said in his small squeaky baby voice,
“Somebody has been eating my soup, and has eaten it all up.”
Then the three BAERS went upstairs, and Father BAER saw at once that his bed was untidy, and he said in his great big growly voice,
“SOMEBODY HAS BEEN SLEEPING IN MY BED!”
Mother BAER saw that her bed, too, had the bedclothes turned back, and she said in her quiet gentle voice,
“Somebody has been sleeping in my bed!”
Then Little BAER went downstairs and looked at his bed and said in his small squeaky baby voice,
“Somebody is sleeping in my bed!”
He squeaked so loudly that Goldie woke up with a start. She jumped out of bed, and away she ran out into the woods . And the three bears BAERS never saw her again… until…
